Smith, Kendall K.

Kendall Kerfoot Smith (1882-1929), professor of Greek literature and history, was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on September 24, 1882. He studied at B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, and graduated from Harvard in 1904. He earned a master of arts degree at Harvard in 1906, studied at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, and returned to Harvard to earn a Ph.D. degree in 1909. He taught the classics at Harvard from 1909 to 1915. In 1915 he came to Brown as assistant professor of Greek literature and history. He was promoted to associate professor in 1923 and David Benedict Professor of Greek literature and history in 1927, when he became the head of the Department of Greek and Latin Classics. During World War I he was involved in establishing Y.M.C.A. huts with the Greek army in the mountain passes in Greece. He died on November 26, 1929 in Providence.
